Saturation & Serenity

One of my favorite activities in NYC is gallery hopping in the Chelsea Gallery District. On Thursday evenings, most galleries are open late, until 8 or 8:30 pm, many hosting opening receptions, often providing an opportunity to meet the artists – the free wine is an added bonus.

A recent opening was Michael Yamaoka’s Saturation & Serenity at the Atlantic Gallery. “In photographs of intense color and almost palpable texture, Michael Yamaoka explores the tensions between color and form, surface and depth, the ravages of time and the timeless. The brilliant color, inherent, but often subdued in the original images, has been enhanced in these new works to depict a heightened reality.”

One of the highlights of this opening was the impromptu singing of New York, New York with accordion accompaniment. The artist, pictured on the right, was all smiles.

Interested in spending a Thursday in Chelsea?
NY Art Beat is a great site to see upcoming events, complete with a snapshot of a piece of work on exhibit. For the novice art lover, like myself, this is particularly helpful in narrowing down the shows that match your tastes. The site filters the events by dates, location and medium.
