Love this! Citizinvestor describes itself as a crowdfunding and civic engagement platform for local government projects in the US. I have friends who scour through Kickstarter looking for cool things to support. Bless them for their altruism, though I’m convinced some just do it for the bragging rights of being an early adopter/supporter. Perhaps instead of the next cool art project or gadget, they may consider supporting a public project.
I recently looked for projects on Citizinvestor, near the NYC area. (I may be in Amsterdam but NYC will always be home.) The closest current project I found was in Rhode Island with the largest concentration in CA. Not sure if this is due to lack of awareness of the site – it is fairly new. Perhaps the first step for the civic-minded citizen is letting their municipal governments know that this is an option for funding their microprojects, which often are the first to get buried in the budgeting process.
Donations are 100% tax deductible. Yeah for that! You don’t get any swag unlike kickstarter for donating – other than the fulfillment of your civic duties and contributing to your community in a grander scale, of course. That should be enough right to at least peruse the site?
Here’s a project that recently was fully funded through Citizinvestor.
