Tyra as Cara

Adding this photo exhibition by Udo Spreitzenbarth to my itinerary when I visit NYC. I’m not a big Tyra fan – never really mastered smizing – but I do appreciate the work of hair and makeup artists and the work of hairstylist Sher Rae Tucker and makeup artist Valente Frazier here is killer. If you glance really quickly, Tyra does look like Cara Delevingne. And supposedly the photos in this exhibit were not retouched!

The exhibit is at Jack Studios, 610 W. 26th Street, 6th Floor until November 9.

This major new exhibition celebrating the life and work of Valentino showcases over 130 exquisite haute couture designs worn by icons such as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and Gwyneth Paltrow in an exciting installation created specially for Somerset House.

Divided into three sections; visitors start with a private view of Valentino’s world through photographs from his personal archive, offering an intimate portrait of the life of the master. The exhibition then unfolds into a couture fashion show where roles are reversed with visitors walking the catwalk to view a staggering one hundred and thirty Valentino haute couture designs. Valentino: Master of Couture is a journey into the secretive world of Italian couture.

The final section unpicks the painstaking processes of crafting couture exemplified by the stunning wedding dress of Princess Marie Chantal of Greece, demonstrating the beauty of the work of les petit mains who sew each stitch by hand. In addition a specially commissioned group of films allows behind-the scenes access to the Valentino atelier, where the craft of couture is demonstrated in a series of fascinating samples. Finally, discover more about the man, the icon, by exploring the Valentino Garavani Virtual Museum.

There are a series of talks, screenings and events to accompany the exhibition.

Drift Eyewear’s Wooden Frames

I’m in the market for new glasses and stumbled across Drift Eyewear’s line of responsibly-sourced wooden frames. My initial thought was that this was the optical equivalent of wooden tennis racquets – chunky, clunky and cumbersome (like Billie Jean King’s trademark specs).

Far from it. Drift Eyewear’s handmade frames are constructed from sustainable wood and the brand’s patent-pending laminated steel core. Each pair is hand finished for maximum comfort. The temples use the innovative PressureFLEX Technology™. This patent pending design provides an optimal combination of strength, flexibility, and balance. The balance is particularly key – preventing the frames from sliding down your nose (or if you’re bridge challenged like me, keeping the slipping to a minimum).

Also, the wood temples are waterproof and UV inert. This means they will not be affected by sun fading or being left in the rain. The wood frames are also very green, manufactured with FSC woods, zero VOC adhesives and coatings, organic fabrics, etc.

Now the bad news or if you’re an elitist, the exclusivity factor. The Timber collection (the ones I quite fancy and that are pictured above) are a limited collection of 100 pairs of each design. They are also available only at limited locations, in Chicago, Seattle and Los Angeles. LA friends, you can pick up a pair at:
